Laura Lynne is best known for creating boldly colored and whimsically designed mixed media art and murals. She is inspired by the immersion in nature she had growing up in Wisconsin, the study of yoga teaching, fairy tales, and song lyrics. Her art training shows a sharp eye for color theory and elaborate compositions. Laura Lynne uses materials like acid-free and lignan-free metallic papers, Golden brand acrylic painted papers, and her own photography archivally printed. How did you discover your talent/medium?
When I was in grade school, my mom worked part-time. She would have crafts prepared for my sister and I to do while she worked. One craft that I loved was making cards using cut paper and glue. I do love painting, but have loved collage and mixed media work since elementary school.
What are the best and most challenging things about creating your unique artwork?
The best thing about making my artwork is sharing it with fans! I love connecting with people at art fairs and markets. It makes me happy to see that something I've created has made someone else smile.
The most challenging part about creating my art since COVID-19 has been dealing with technical issues, whether it's my website or tediously filming and editing videos. I feel lucky my husband is able to help with the tech part of my business though!
How has COVID-19 affected your work?:
Due to COVID-19, art fairs and markets have been severely limited or cancelled. At the start of the year I invested thousands in new display equipment that is just sitting in my basement. I am working on improving my online presence, however, it's a different game than the in-person events. It seems harder to reach my target market. Indoor murals have also come to a halt. I had applied for a lot of outdoor public mural opportunities that have either been cancelled, postponed to 2021, or the cities have decided to use local artists instead. An artist-in-residence position that was supposed to provide a good portion of income for this year has also been postponed. It's been rough.
What recent opportunities have you been involved in?
This past June, when the protests began over issues regarding the Black Lives Matter and People of Color movement, many downtown Aurora businesses were vandalized. When plywood boarded up many windows, I was able to create public art with fellow Aurora artists to create positive and powerful messages for our community. Pictured in the collage below is the work of Pierre Lucero, Jen Keller, Catalina Diaz, Laura Reyes, and myself. It was a lovely way to uplift artists and spread beauty on our Aurora streets.
