Since 1998, the Kaneland Arts Initiative has been providing quality fine arts to the Kaneland Community.
The Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival (KCFAF) is the founding and signature event of the Kaneland Arts Initiative (KAI). The event is free to the public and appropriate for all ages. The seven hour event is held annually in April. The KAI brings over 30 professional visual and performing arts to present their work in this award winning celebration of the Arts.
Begun in 2009, the KAI Performance Series brings affordable professional quality performances year round to the state-of-the-art Kaneland Auditorium. Some past performers include Lee Murdock, the Spellbinder, St. Charles Singers, Las Vegas Magician Garry Carson, NIU Jazz Ensemble, and Main Street Kids Club.
Annually, the KAI brings a summer theatre production to the Kaneland Auditorium stage. Past shows have been Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Once Upon a Mattress, and big! the Musical. With each year, the program has continued to grow and has become wildly popular among in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland Communities.
In January 2014, KAI was thrilled to introduce a theatrical production held in Kaneland High School’s Black Box Theatre. KAI has produced The Laramie Project, a staged reading of The Diary of Anne Frank, and the 2016 world premiere performances of Memorial Park, a play written by Kaneland graduate Nic Wehrwein. The intimate space of the Black Box theatre is the perfect venue for plays of a more thoughtful nature, riveting productions that promote a discussion around the plot of the show.
In 2013, the Kaneland Arts Initiative introduced a unique program designed to bring a professional artist into Kaneland classrooms. The mission of the KAI Artist in Residence Program is to enrich and support ongoing Arts education within the Kaneland School District at all levels by collaborating with a professional artist. The goal of the Artist in Residence Program is to partner a professional artist with the Kaneland Fine Arts Faculty who will facilitate interaction between the artist and the Kaneland students in order to promote a better understanding of a working artist in a specific medium within the Arts and to provide an authentic experience and dialogue about careers in the Arts.
